A cone sleeve is food packaging worn at the point of maximum mess. What keeps it legible — and legal — is chemistry chosen on purpose.
What attacks the sleeve
Butterfat from waffle cones, syrup and drip from the scoop, hot oil from fries, and the warmth of a hand around all of it.
Ordinary paper wicks oil through in about a minute; the sheet goes translucent, the print blotches, and the sleeve reads ruined while the product is still being eaten.
What a barrier actually does
Grease-resistant stocks close the sheet’s fibres so oil sits on the surface instead of wicking through. Ratings vary — a gelato sleeve and a fry sleeve are not the same spec, and the fry sleeve works harder.
The barrier should be matched to the product served and stated on the quote. Ours is, in writing.
Why the inks matter too
The sleeve touches the wafer and sits millimetres from the food, so the ink system has to be food-safe — not just the paper.
Food-safe ink also behaves differently on kraft than on white stock, which is why we proof colour on the actual barrier sheet rather than on office paper. Screens and plain paper both lie.
Choosing for a menu
Serve ice cream only: standard barrier, full colour, done. Add churros or fries: the savoury formats get the heavier oil rating and heat-rated inks. Run events: same specs on short runs, because a wedding sleeve that blotches is not a keepsake.
